In 1966, Horst Nitzsche immigrated to the United States from West Germany with his wife Erika and young son Michael. Starting off wasn’t easy, as Horst did not speak English making it difficult to find work. His first job was to scrap metal; from there he went out on his own painting houses and eventually opened his own paint store. When paint did not prove to be profitable, the aspiring entrepreneurs, Horst & Erika began selling imported foods from Europe resulting in the opening of the Import Haus & Delicatessen.

In 1989, after over 15 years of hard work, dedication and with a background in the specialty food business, Horst networked his way to becoming a leading nationwide importer and distributor of fine European gourmet foods called Gourmet International. Today, Gourmet International has experienced great success! The warehouse has been expanded four times to fit the large selection of over 3,000 imported gourmet products and an impressive holiday assortment including the most sought-after imported brands.
